Mint Juleps at Home
Each year at Churchill Downs in Louisville, folks gather from around the globe to experience “the greatest two minutes in sports.” The experience is ripe with pageantry. Celebrities and Louisville locals gather in their best finery, including the tradition of fabulous, even outlandish, derby hats.
But the horse-racing experience isn’t complete without a Mint Julep. Here’s how to make one, courtesy of liquor.com:
- Crushed Ice
- 1/4 ounce simple syrup
- 2 ounces bourbon
- Mint leaves
- Garnish: bitters
- Garnish: mint sprig
In a rocks glass, lightly muddle the mint and syrup. Then add the bourbon and pack it tightly with crushed ice. Stir until frost appears on the outside of the cup. Top with more crushed ice and garnish with a sprig of mint and a few more drops of bitters.
